Bernie Stanley 

President

Bernie Stanley is a native of Henrico County, Virginia with family roots in Western Hanover around Stanley’s Store. He attended Hermitage High School, VCU (Richmond, VA), Bridgewater College (Bridgewater, VA), the University of Barcelona (Spain), and graduated from VCU in 1994 with a liberal arts degree majoring in Political Science and Spanish. He was a real estate agent from 1994 to 1999.

Taking advantage of his ability to speak Spanish, he also spent several years teaching it in Henrico and Hanover County schools. He also bought and sold foreclosed properties for several years until 1999 when he started his construction business, South Anna Properties, LLC. Restoration of historic properties, new homes, and additions was the focus of his business until 2007 when solar energy caught his eye.

Bernie served his Hanover community as a member of the Farrington Volunteer Fire Department from 2001-2006 and served as a field team member of Piedmont Search and Rescue from 2007-2009. He earned his 50 ton Merchant Mariner Credential (Captain’s License) in 2014 and enjoys boating with his family and friends in the Chesapeake Bay. Bernie lives in Ashland on the South Anna River and spends most weekends on his boat in Gloucester Point, Virginia.

RYAN PHAUP

Chief of Operations / Technical Consultant

A life long resident of Hanover County, Ryan graduated from White Pine Academy in 2014. He decided not to go to college reasoning that a college degree does not always equate with a better career.  He began searching for a business that could teach him a growing trade, which brought him to Shockoe Solar in February of 2016. As an accomplished self-learner, he rapidly acquired the skills necessary to become a seasoned solar installer. Being the only Millennial at the time, his area of expertise was with programming and setting up online monitoring for all systems installed by Shockoe Solar.

Ryan is now certified in Enphase Ensemble and LG Chem battery systems. He is an expert on SMA, SolarEdge, SolArk and many other inverters. He is our Chief of Operations and our head of technical support. His knowledge of battery systems is unsurpassed.

In his spare time he enjoys the outdoors, whether it be hiking, sailing, rock climbing, or any other sport. This enjoyment was planted in him at an early age, as a lifelong Boy Scout. He achieved the rank of Eagle in 2014 and still continues to volunteer at local camps and events.

SCOTT RAINEY

Chief Financial Officer

With over two decades of experience in finance and a passion for sustainable energy, Scott Rainey brings a unique perspective to the role of CFO at Shockoe Solar. Prior to joining Shockoe, Scott held various securities licenses and worked as an investment advisor. He also served as a deputy sheriff in the law enforcement division of the Gloucester County, VA Sheriff’s Office.

A lifelong resident of Virginia, Scott is a proud boat captain and enjoys spending time on the water with his family. He and his wife, Angie, an RN, have three children and reside in Gloucester, VA.

Scott is committed to helping Shockoe Solar achieve its mission of providing clean, affordable energy to the community. 

TYLER DEBUS

Lead Technician / Residential Design

Tyler Debus joined the Shockoe team in 2021.  Tyler attended VCU where he studied Painting and Print Making and graduated with his Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2008.  Throughout college and after, Tyler worked in local restaurants eventually moving into management positions.  Prior to Shockoe Solar, Tyler managed the Seafood Department at Whole Foods.  After spending multiple years in the restaurant and retail industry, he decided to shift his focus to a new industry and is excited about the opportunity to learn from the team. Tyler lives in Chesterfield with his wife and two dogs.  

In his spare time, he enjoys live music, home projects, disc golf, and craft beer.  He is also learning stained glass from a local artist. 

Brytni is a born and raised Ashland girl. As our newest member of the team, she comes to us with over 13 years of senior administrative, AP/AR and accounting experience. She has taken immense interest in solar and has learned a great deal about the industry in her time with us. As our Operations Manager, you’ll find her in the details of every step of the way, from start to finish of each project.

In her spare time she enjoys capturing love and light through the lens of her camera, as she owns her own photography business as well. She is a true animal lover; a trait deeply engraved and inherited from her mother. She is a founding member of her church, with her faith being the most essential and important thing to her. 

LUke STANLEY

Technician / Installer

Lucas “Luke” Stanley has been working with his dad (Bernie) doing solar for several years. He attended electrical trade school at Patrick Henry High School in Ashland, Virginia. Luke has had many hours of electrical training both in class and on-the-job as well as Enphase online training.

In his spare time, Luke enjoys playing the guitar and spending time at the gym where he has made a radical transformation that must be seen to believe!

Garrett Loomis

Technician / Installer

Garrett Loomis has been an integral part of Shockoe Solar’s team for many years. His tireless work ethic, attention to details and perpetually good spirits are just another reason to choose Shockoe Solar. He is an avid guitar /ukelele, and trumpet player who can be seen playing at venues around Richmond.

Jackson Heath

Technician / Installer

Jackson Heath is a proud member of Shockoe’s team. Jackson’s dedication and work ethic are only surpassed by his positive attitude and willingness to work through challenges. Jackson loves the gym and has always been very athletic.
