Solar Electricity Explained
The sun has been used in architecture for heating and lighting since the days of ancient man by orienting structures toward the sun. Today, modern man can harness “free” electricity by using photovoltaic solar modules.
Solar: Renewable “Free” Electricity
Solar energy, like wind and hydro power, is a renewable energy source because it is virtually inexhaustible and it does not emit greenhouse gases during production. Once the solar energy system is paid for, the supplemental electricity (15% - 80%) is free beyond basic maintenance.
Solar Module
Often incorrectly referred to as a “panel,” the solar module is made from silicon discs. When heated (photosynthesis), the electrons within the discs are aligned from a random order to positive and negative charges, which produces DC current. The DC current is then converted to household AC power by the inverter.
Determining Solar Potential
A commercial or residential solar energy system is based on four basic criteria:
- Historic energy consumption.
- Orientation to sun and available sunlight at the site.
- Available roof and/or ground space.
- Tax bracket and budget.
To assess your solar energy potential, Shockoe Solar uses our proprietary SunEye device to analyze the sun’s exact angle onto the building.
